This course has been updated and relaunched by APSNA for nurses who have an interest in advancing their knowledge of the care of children with common pediatric surgical conditions. This webinar program features six select surgical diagnoses including thyroid nodules, appendicitis, chest wall deformities, inguinal hernia, intussusception, and pyloric stenosis. Content addresses evaluation, management and follow up for these specific conditions. The content is applicable for both the bedside and advanced practice nurse.
Objectives:
Ms. Paton has been a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner since 1999. She is the Director of Advanced Practice Nursing at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. She is also an Assistant Professor in the College of Nursing at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. She practices as a Nurse Practitioner in Pediatric Surgery and for the last 15 years has been responsible for inpatient and outpatient pediatric surgical patients. Her areas of interest cover a wide range of surgical conditions for which she has developed knowledge and expertise in the surgical management of these patients including patient and family education and long term follow up. She is a national speaker on the care of surgical patients and pediatric nursing. She is a member of APSNA and was the 2016-2017 Director of Education.
Michelle B. Goreth, MSN, RN-BC, CPNP-AC, CCRN-P, CTRN, CPEN, TCRN
Michelle Goreth is a Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner with over 21 years of experience. She currently serves as the Program Director for the Pediatric and Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Tracks at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, School of Nursing. She is a graduate of the University of Mississippi Medical Center (BSN 1999, DNP 2018) and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (MSN, 2009). She maintains a clinical practice in the Division of Pediatric Surgery at Children’s of Mississippi at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, the state’s only Level I Pediatric Trauma Center, where she served as the division’s first nurse practitioner and Lead Nurse Practitioner until 2019. Her research interests include role transition of the pediatric acute care advanced practice nurse in academic trauma centers, pediatric mild traumatic brain injury, and trauma quality improvement with multiple peer-reviewed publications. Michelle is a local, regional, and national lecturer with special emphasis in Pediatrics, Surgery, Trauma, and Quality Improvement. Throughout her career, she has been an active member of multiple organizations and committees related to advanced practice, pediatrics, and emergency and trauma care. Currently, she holds seats on both the research and advanced practice provider committees of the Pediatric Trauma Society as well as appointments for multiple state committees on pediatric trauma care. Michelle has been at the forefront of pediatric trauma advocacy, promoting statewide pediatric injury prevention efforts and health promotion as well as raising awareness on the national stage.
